After you prepare your resume, you want to make sure you make a good impression
in your first interview. See the following tips for some interviewing dos and
don’ts.
|
| 10 Things to Remember when interviewing |
-
Before the interview, think of possible questions that could be asked and
practice giving answers.
Some sample interview questions:
How did you resolve a conflict with another employee at a previous workplace?
Describe a time when you had to manage several different tasks at once.
Describe a time when you had to work under a deadline and prioritize your
assignments.
-
Dress Appropriately
If possible, find out the dress code of your potential employer before you go
to the interview. If you are not sure, it is better to overdress rather than
underdress.
-
Arrive at least 10 minutes early
-
When meeting your interviewer, give a firm but not aggressive handshake and
make eye contact.
-
Try to avoid saying "Um" during your interview. If you need time to think
before giving an answer, just pause.
-
Listen carefully to the questions your interview is asking. If you cannot think
of an answer to a question, don’t be afraid to ask to move on and then come
back to it at a later point in the interview. Be sure that you answer it though
because you do not want to seem inexperienced.
-
Throughout the interview make frequent eye contact with your interviewer. Do
not stare while you are talking to him or her but be sure that you are not
avoiding their eyes.
-
Be aware of your body language. Sit up straight and on the edge of your chair.
Do not cross your arms or slouch in your chair.
-
If you are offered the job on the spot, don’t be afraid to ask for 24 hours or
the weekend to consider their offer.
-
Never talk salary in the first interview.
